I recently went on a trip to a photography workshop in Ireland and one thing really struck a chord with me. Everywhere we went the other attendees would always bring their cameras with them. I know this doesn't seem like that big of a deal. I mean we are all photographers right?!
Well, let me explain.
I am not sure when the switch happened but over the years I would always say “I don't want to bring my camera with me, that's “work” and I am not working today”. My mind formed this idea that unless I was being paid, I shouldn't bring my camera with me. I had created a photography business and no longer saw any reason to just play around. To add to this, I was a people photographer. This is what I loved, and what I was good at, so why would I shoot anything else? What was the point? I photographed people.
The week I welcomed my husband home from a 7-month deployment, we decided to take a family vacation to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. While we passed around the idea for this trip over and over before he came home, the final decision came down when a client booked a family beach session in the middle of the trip! Now we really had that big push to go.
So I brought my camera with down me, for work of course.
But during the beach trip, one of the first things we did was go hang out at the beach. I found myself kind of sad I didn't have my professional gear with me. The kids were having so much fun and my cell phone camera can only do so much. So the next day, when we went hiking (really just a nice walk through the nature preserves) I decided this was the time to have fun with my kids and my camera.
And I am so glad I did! I caught my oldest son “exploring” with his finger goggles, and my boys playing with nature. I caught my husband, who had been gone for so long, just hanging out with the family. I caught laughs and I caught tears.
I caught memories as they were happening.
This is what makes this move to Jacksonville Florida so intriguing. Not only have I moving my Family Photography business, but I am also able to explore new amazing places with these amazing boys in my life.
